Day Trips
Akaroa
Coming over the hill and experiencing your first view of the Akaroa basin is one of the South Island’s unforgettable moments. This ancient volcanic crater, with its steep, lush meadows and woodlands is a true gem. If your taste includes fabulous scenic beauty and a delightful lunch in the French influenced village, Akaroa makes a most rewarding day trip. Perhaps include a dolphin cruise to fill out the afternoon…
Lake Tekapo
A favourite destination for a beautiful day trip. Lake Tekapo is nestled amongst grand mountain peaks and features the startling turquoise colour so unique to New Zealands high country lakes. Tekapo village has a good selection of nice establishments for a lunch, and a recently developed complex with hot pools, ice skating and snow tubing.
Arthur’s Pass
Highest railway pass on the South Island. This is an easy drive via main roads, taking you through beautiful hills and valleys. En route, take a small hike among the amazing rock formations of Castle Hill – a unique photo opportunity. Closer to Arthur’s Pass is the classic Bealey Hotel; always an enjoyable pit stop.
Gardens
There are lovely public gardens such as Awa Awa Rata Reserve, at its best in spring and early summer when the Rhododendrons are spectacular. There are also a number of homesteads and grand private gardens which open to visitors seasonally.
Horseback Riding
Several operations in the vicinity offer horse riding excursions, typically featuring a mix of open country and serene beech forest. None of us in the Ski Time crew has actually done an outing, but the feedback from guests has been most enthusiastic.
Massage & Fitness
For a small village, Methven is very amply supplied with options for massage and other therapies from sports massage to Thai style, therapeutic, relaxation or physiotherapy. The local gym is well equipped and accepts casual customers as well as members. Beauty treatments, hair, nails etc are also available in the village. All the pampering you need…
